N.B.
Clearly articulate how your solution reduces emissions or improves energy/resource efficiency in the steel/MSME value chain, and which specific focus areas and use cases in Eastern India’s steel clusters it targets.

Demonstrate pilot‑readiness with evidence of prototypes/POCs, early results, or a credible plan to move from research to industrial testing within the programme's support window.

Highlight your team’s ability to work with MSME partners, manage pilots on‑ground and leverage the non‑dilutive funding and additional pilot support effectively, instead of submitting generic climate/cleantech pitches.

Scheme Details In Depth

The Greenovation Green Steel Challenge is a national innovation challenge designed to identify, support, and pilot high‑impact solutions that enable the deep decarbonisation of India’s steel sector, especially in MSME steel clusters in Eastern India. It offers non‑dilutive cash grants of up to ₹25 lakh, along with additional pilot implementation support of up to ₹10 lakh, so winners do not give up equity or take on debt. The challenge is a joint initiative of the EarthON Foundation and the Greenovation Hub (SwitchON Foundation), run in collaboration with WWF, IGSN and the Rajiva Sinha Foundation.

The programme seeks prototypes and proofs‑of‑concept that can be piloted in live industrial settings such as steel MSME clusters across West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh, providing real industrial testbeds to validate and de‑risk solutions before scale‑up. It aligns with India’s National Action Plan on Climate Change and long‑term decarbonisation goals, including the 500 GW non‑fossil energy target by 2030 and net‑zero by 2070, and leverages the Ministry of Steel’s pioneering Green Steel Taxonomy.

Focus areas span energy‑efficient aGreenovation Green Steel Challenge

EarthON Foundation Greenovation Green Steel Challenge

EarthON Foundation & Greenovation Hub (SwitchON Foundation))nd digitalised furnaces, process optimisation, waste heat recovery, renewable energy integration, scrap value‑chain strengthening, green and blended finance mechanisms and other decarbonisation innovations relevant to steel and allied MSMEs. Participants benefit from pilot opportunities with steel MSMEs, expert mentorship from industry and climate experts, capacity‑building on low‑carbon pathways and strong visibility with industry, government and global sustainability partners.

The challenge welcomes technology providers, innovators, enterprises (including startups), and academic/R&D institutions that can deliver implementable solutions or tools for decarbonisation, energy efficiency and emissions reduction and are willing to transfer or pilot their technologies with industry partners. By combining non‑dilutive funding with pilots and ecosystem access, it aims to turn promising green steel ideas into pilot‑ready, scalable solutions that strengthen India’s competitiveness in an increasingly climate‑conscious global steel market.

Additional Information

Eligibility
Open to technology providers, innovators, enterprises (including startups), and academic/R&D institutions working on solutions relevant to steel decarbonisation.

Solutions must be at the prototype, proof‑of‑concept or pilot‑ready stage, or at the research stage with a clear pathway towards implementation in industrial settings.

Proposed innovation should address at least one focus area: energy efficiency and process optimisation, renewable energy integration, scrap value chain, green/innovative financing mechanisms or other decarbonisation innovations for the steel/MSME industry.

Applicants must be willing and able to test or pilot their solutions with steel MSMEs across Eastern India (e.g., West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh) using real industrial testbeds.

Groups and individuals should be willing to transfer or adapt their technology or model to industry partners to enable practical decarbonisation outcomes.

Winners must be able to utilise non‑dilutive grant funding and pilot support for implementation, reporting and follow‑up activities as per programme guidance. (Operational expectation drawn directly from the described funding and pilot structure.)
Location Eligibility
National scope with focus on India: described as a national innovation challenge for India’s steel sector. Solutions must be deployable/pilotable with steel MSMEs across Eastern India (notably West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh), but applicant organisations and teams are not explicitly geographically restricted in the sourced documents.
