Scheme Details In Depth

The DBT–BIRAC Joint Call on “Bio-AI” supports cutting-edge, data-driven research that integrates Artificial Intelligence with biotechnology to enable high-performance biomanufacturing under India’s BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) Policy. This national call invites problem statements and research solutions that will establish Bio-AI capabilities as a key enabler for India’s Biomanufacturing and Bio-foundry Initiative. Proposals must be submitted online via the BIRAC portal.

Bio AI Biomanufacturing: Program Objectives

The call aims to build Bio-AI hubs and projects that generate novel research leads and platforms impacting Health, Agriculture and Environment, aligned with the Cabinet-approved BioE3 policy and the Bio-RIDE scheme. Bio-AI biomanufacturing is positioned to accelerate discovery, design, and process optimisation through advanced AI/ML, multi-omics, and computational approaches. Projects are expected to deliver scalable, translational outputs that directly strengthen India’s biomanufacturing ecosystem.

Focus Thematic Areas

Proposals are invited under five major categories:

  • Biomolecular Design – AI-driven protein, enzyme and biomolecule design, functional prediction, and programmable bio-nanomachines.
  • Sustainable Agriculture – AI-enabled climate-resilient crops, precision agriculture, non-invasive sensing, and decision-support systems.
  • Synthetic Biology – AI-assisted pathway design, metabolic engineering, chassis development and genetic circuit optimisation.
  • Ayurveda – AI-powered evidence generation, formulation optimisation, and integrative therapeutic discovery.
  • Genome Diagnostics – AI/ML for genomics, disease risk prediction, and precision diagnostics.

Key Benefits

  • Competitive grant funding up to ₹25 crore for multi-institution, multi-disciplinary Bio-AI biomanufacturing projects.
  • Support for academia–industry collaborations to build Bio-AI hubs and translational pipelines.
  • Integration into India’s biomanufacturing infrastructure, Bio-AI hubs and Bio-Enabler network under BioE3.
  • Proposals are evaluated in a rolling manner up to 30 June 2026, ensuring timely support for high-potential Bio-AI initiatives.
  • Projects with academic partners are funded by DBT; industry-involved or industry-only projects are supported by BIRAC.

How to Apply

Interested applicants must submit their Problem Statement and Research Solution as a Concept Note or Letter of Intent (LoI) in the prescribed online format through the official BIRAC call page. No hard copies are required. The last date for submission is 30 June 2026 (midnight). Proposals will be evaluated periodically in a rolling manner and supported based on merit and alignment with BioE3 objectives.
